Two council-built care homes are set to open in Liverpool this month in order to meet the rising demand for dementia care services. The two care homes are the first council-owned care homes to open in the city for more than 25 years. The first £8m care home is set to open in Speke and the second care home will open in Everton later this month. Care at the centres is being delivered by the employee-owned company Shaw healthcare. Partnerships with local colleges and training organisations has enabled the firm to recruit around 80% of the staff from the local area, a quarter of whom were previously unemployed. The council has borrowed money to build the two centres, with repayments covered by income from the leases on each site.
