Wolverhampton announces next phase of building programme

Wolverhampton City Council has revealed the plans for its fifth phase of its successful newbuild council housing programme, using small unused sites.

Sixteen old garage sites and small plots of disused land have been identified for phase 5 following site investigations, checks and public consultation.

The proposed sites, that are expected to yield 56 new homes, are Southall Road, Wolmer Road, Woodside, Townson Road and Simmons Road (all Wednesfield North), Land south off 97 Myatt Avenue (Ettingshall), Park View (Bilston North), Cavendish Road and Abingdon Road (both East Park), Batmanshill Road (Bilston East), Bushbury Magic Gardens, infill land adjacent to 129 Goodyear Avenue, infill land adjacent to 32 Annan Avenue and land between 48 and 50 Neve Avenue (all Bushbury South and Low Hill), Elmdon Close former allotment site (Oxley), and Inkerman Street (Heath Town).

The works will be carried out across 2020 and 2021 by local contractors selected through a competitive tendering process, encouraging small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to bid.

The fourth phase being delivered by J Harper & Sons is now close to completion and will take the number of council homes built under this scheme to 99.

The scheme is monitored through a joint project team from the local authority and Wolverhampton Homes, to ensure the new council homes are built to a high standard.

‘This scheme is helping smarten up neighbourhoods in the city while providing affordable housing to residents in housing need,’ said cabinet member for city assets and housing, Cllr Jacqueline Sweetman.

‘It started as a pilot programme and has grown from strength to strength, delivering almost 100 council homes in its first four phases.

‘The selected contractors are delivering what we ask of them to improve our housing offer and it has proved to be an effective way to deliver new homes for the people of Wolverhampton.

‘Crucially, it increases the city’s houses stock when it needs it most,’ added Cllr Sweetman.
