Newcastle City Council has announced plans to make part of its city centre a car-free zone. The proposals include changing the way the space within the city is used, with plans for more green areas and spaces for events and activities. One of the main changes will be making Blackett Street a car-free zone, with buses re-routed to create a more people-friendly area. The council said that they hope these changes will allow events and activities to take place on Blackett Street, which will, in turn, encourage people into the city to support local retailers. Residents and businesses are invited to comment on the proposals as part of a consultation that is taking place until January 31.
