2,500 homes approved for £1.2bn North Lincolnshire scheme

North Lincolnshire Council has given planning permission for 2,500 new homes.

The plans approved by the council’s planning committee yesterday also include a lake, a village centre, parks, community facilities and a new school.

The ambitious £1.2bn Lincolnshire Lakes scheme aims to create six new waterside villages on the outskirts of Scunthorpe.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, welcomed the planning approval, saying: ‘This development has been nearly twenty years in the making and this is a milestone moment for confidence in housing development in North Lincolnshire.

‘The scheme has been delayed for the past few years until we were able to keep our promises to local residents to put the right infrastructure in place first.

“Throughout the planning for this visionary scheme, we’ve been clear that we must get the infrastructure right in order to ensure that Lincolnshire Lakes develops sustainably over the next 20 years.’

Among the provisions the developers must provide as part of the planning conditions for the scheme include a new primary school, a £250,000 extension to an existing school in Scunthorpe and a £5m contribution to a secondary school.

The developers will also have to construct destination parks in two of the villages, one allotment, as well as an artificial lake.

They must also put money towards improvements to nearby roads and make a £1.3m contribution to new public transport links.

Earlier this year, North Lincolnshire Council approved plans for a new roundabout on the M181 which will form part of the Lincolnshire Lakes development.

The new £13.5m junction will allow new and existing settlements direct access to the motorway and act as a bypass for the village of Burringham.

A £13.3m government-funded flood defence scheme is currently being completed along the banks of the nearby River Trent in preparation for the Lincolnshire Lakes development.

‘With the government-funded flood defence scheme nearing completion on the Trent, and the green light earlier this year for the new motorway junction, the pieces are falling into place,’ Cllr Waltham added.

‘Now planning permission is in place, the Lincolnshire Lakes scheme can really start. Children growing up across the region today will have the opportunity to start their families in lakeside communities in North Lincolnshire.’

Once finished, the Lincolnshire Lakes scheme is expected to include a total of 6,304 homes across six villages and five lakes, as well as a business park, office accommodation and a 12,000-seater sports stadium.
