In the run-up to Christmas, Alexander Hall has revealed when it comes to the mortgage affordability of our favourite TV homes, Gavin and Stacey tops the table.
We’re probably all familiar with the iconic scene when Pamala Shipman screams in disgust ‘BARRY ISLAND!’ when she finds out her son, Gavin is moving to Wales with his wife Stacey. However, if she’d have known then how cheap it is to live there, she might not have been so horrified.
Mortgage advisor, Alexander Hall has analysed 10 famous Christmas TV properties by looking at their current market value and the monthly re-mortgage repayment required after placing a 15% deposit.
One of the homes examined was the terraced house in Barry Island that features in Gavin and Stacey, which is set to premier one last time on Christmas Day.
The average value of the property currently stands at £224,612. This means that the average buyer would require a mortgage loan to the tune of £190,920 having placed a 15% deposit, which would see them pay an average of £1,011 per month when repaying their mortgage.
Another property included in the list is the flat in Peckham, home to Del Boy and Rodney Trotter. The home ranks as the second most affordable although it values at £439,722 and has a monthly repayment of £1,979 per month.
Whilst it’s unlikely that Harry Potter has any desire to return to the Dursley family home, it does rank as the third most affordable, with a semi-detached home in Bracknell requiring an average monthly mortgage payment of £2,025.
In contrast, the McCallister’s detached mansion in Chicago is worth a great deal more. The property is estimated to cost around £4.116million in the current market, which means homebuyers would be looking at a monthly cost of £22,460.
Commenting on the research, Stephanie Daley, Director of Partnerships at Alexander Hall, said: ‘Christmas wouldn’t be the same without some of the classic entertainment that tends to grace our screens during the festive season and, for many, re-watching our favourites each year is a cornerstone of our Christmas traditions.
‘In many cases, the properties featured in these TV shows and films can be as iconic as the shows themselves and the Home Alone house is perhaps the most famous of the lot.
‘However, this year there’s only one show that everyone is talking about and excitement for the last ever Gavin and Stacey is as high, if not higher, than the anticipation of Christmas Day itself.
‘But if you can’t quite let go, the good news is that Stacey’s home in South Wales tops the table when it comes to property market and mortgage affordability, meaning that a move to Barry could be very obtainable for the average homebuyer.’
