The two schemes, in partnership with Homes England, have secured planning approval from local authorities.
Speaking today in parliament, communities secretary Robert Jenrick said there had ‘been a serious breakdown of governance’ at the council.
The commitment is part of a new strategic partnership between the local authority and the charity Fields in Trust.
In a letter to Cumbria County Council, the government said Mr Jenrick believed the application had raised issues of ‘more than local importance.’
A new report by the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) reveals the local authority spend £511m with its top 300 supplies in 2019/20.
A report, which goes before the council’s cabinet later this week, is seeking approving for a scheme to build 105 homes.
