The Role:

To undertake a range of highway related inspections (safety, programmed, condition and statutory undertaker’s openings) on the highway network.

Working as part of a team you will carry out a variety of inspections relating to condition and safety to identify any potential hazards in which the public may encounter.   

You will also be expected to inspect statutory undertakers works and liaise with them in respect of compliance with regulations and approved codes of practice under the NRSWA 1991.

You will also be expected to attend court and provide witness evidence to support to the Council’s drive to defend claims to protect council funds.

You will need to investigate complaints relating to highway infringements and take appropriate action to seek a resolution in line with council policies.

The role also includes responding to customer reports in respect of the highway network and provide customer feedback and advice, whether by correspondence, site meetings or by telephone.

About You:

There will be an expectation that the candidate be familiar with highway construction, repair techniques, dealing with contractors and be able to interpret the relevant codes of practice relating to highway maintenance and statutory undertakers works.  

 You will need a full UK driving licence.

 IT literate

 Knowledge of the network

 Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

 Self-motivated

Able to work alone and prioritise workloads.

Able to work as part of a team.

Able to work under pressure.

The council is required under its statutory duty as a local highway authority to maintain all its highways which are under its control. The Highways Inspector is a key role in delivering that duty through inspections, identifying maintenance needs, monitoring of contractors and other third parties.

The role will also include liaison with all highway users including the public as well as Council Members.

You will be based at Paderborn House, however, much of your time will be outdoors, and you will be given all the necessary training and support, a competitive rate of pay and flexible hours arrangements.
