Worcester is a city where the historic and modern combine to form a vibrant and dynamic destination: with a strong sense of identity and a clear sense of purpose for the future.
The Council plays a central role in preserving Worcester’s remarkable heritage and assets, while ensuring the city never stands still. We are taking on new responsibilities, securing new funding and nurturing the cultural and creative potential that the city holds in abundance. We now have an opportunity for a highly capable and ambitious individuals who can bring proven expertise in their own professional specialism as well as the breadth of perspective to see how their contribution connects to the work of others. We want someone who will buy into our commitment to make things happen on the ground and who can support our strategic objectives, while providing high quality services to our residents.
We are committed to providing an efficient, customer-focused and professional planning function -that includes the objective professional expertise to fulfil a key statutory role and can also support our strategic aspirations for the ongoing development and vitality of our city. Worcester presents an intriguing canvas for this work. Balancing the inevitable tensions between the preservation of our heritage assets with the economic aspirations and infrastructure needs of a modern city is a complex and sometime contentious brief. Therefore, this role will suit someone who can bring a rounded perspective to issues, to ensure that development is carefully managed but not stifled, and that effective communication and engagement, alongside expert professional advice, ensures that the planning service is a major contributor to the long-term ambitions of the City Council.
Your full remit will include:
You’ll possess a clear sense of how a modern Planning function can operate – adopting a customer-centric approach and embracing new ways of working. You’ll be fully appraised on current and emerging changes to legislation and requirements and be able to offer informed, expert advice on how upcoming changes can be planned for. We expect that you’ll be an RTPI member, and that you have proven management experience in a town planning function, including responsibility for people and resource management.
