West Midland Combined Authority (WMCA) has signed a deal with property developers Urban Splash to deliver 10,000 homes across the region.
The deal means that Urban Splash will deliver around 5% of the WMCA’s 215,000 new homes by 2031 target.
The 10,000 multi-tenure homes will consist of various ownership models. The homes will be built on brownfield sites in order to contribute to the regeneration of the region.
The WMCA Single Commissioning Framework which launched last September will provide a set of criteria that will be applied to all of the housing projects, these include requirements on affordable housing, design and modular construction.
The aim of this deal is to bring together public and private sector skills and investment to unlock brownfield sites.
Urban Splash will invest in the acquisition, planning, promotion and delivery of the housing development sites and will use modern methods of construction.
Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street said: ‘The West Midlands economy is continuing to grow at a fast pace and more companies and people are coming here looking to enjoy everything our region has to offer.
‘This is, of course, brilliant news, but it also brings with it a set of challenges, especially in terms of providing enough homes and commercial premises to keep up with demand.
‘Urban Splash is one of the most innovative developers in the UK using modern methods of construction that can deliver quality homes and commercial premises to keep up with demand.

‘By combining that expertise with WMCA resources, support and expertise we can help meet the housing demand and transform acres of former industrial land into vibrant new communities, protecting our precious greenbelt land in the process.’
In related news, a new hub to offer people in the West Midlands free construction training has opened in Birmingham city centre.
