The final phase of the Gorton town square project begins

Work to complete Gorton’s high street investment project is set to move into its final stage, with a new play area and additional seating planned.

The scheme, which first began in 2025, will extend the town square and introduce new play features for children, alongside extra seating and planting.

North West contractor Warden Construction is delivering the extended area, which has been designed to host events throughout the year. The council says the development will create a more community-focused space.

Cllr Bev Craig OBE, leader of Manchester City Council, said: ‘The ongoing investment in Gorton is a great example of what we are looking to do to support high streets across the city.’

The investment is part of wider plans to reshape Gorton’s town centre, set out in the neighbourhood’s development framework. It follows earlier projects in the area including the opening of the Gorton Hub community space in 2022.

Looking to the future, hundreds of new mixed-tenure homes have been proposed, which include social rent and affordable housing on council-owned land overlooking the square.

Work is also underway at Gorton market, where roof repairs have been completed and solar panels have been installed.

Some businesses are being relocated within the market to allow for further investment. Plans include a new food hall and improvements to existing units, with more details expected in the next few weeks.

Cllr Craig continued: ‘What started with the Gorton Hub in 2022 has now expanded to a brand new town square – a new focal point for the neighbourhood – major investment in the market building to make sure it can continue to serve this community for years to come, and we’ll soon begin to see the first genuinely affordable and social housing start on site.

‘This next phase starting on site is great news for the area and we’ll soon welcome other similar investment projects starting on site soon in Moston and Newton Heath – alongside the Wythenshawe Town Centre project that is already well underway.’

Work on the development is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
