Knight Wood Portfolio Limited have submitted a planning application to convert Hull’s former Portland Hotel into a 122-bed house of multiple occupation (HMO).
According to the plans, which are currently being considered by Hull City Council, four floors of the building will become home to 20 rooms, while the first floor will accommodate 13 and 29 on the second.
The application also details plans to construct laundry facilities with around a 1:5 ratio of tenants to machines planned for every floor. Bedrooms are also set to be fitted with a small kitchenette to cater for people that are more private than others.
Alongside the kitchenettes in rooms, experts have explained that they have intentions to create ‘generous kitchen facilities’ at ‘several locations on each floor’. What’s more, a gym, cinema room and communal working spaces for people who work remotely are also set to be part of the development.
Should this project be given the green light, it will contribute to the ‘peculiar’ life this building has previously experienced. The establishment, situated on Paragon Street, was Hull’s first AA four-star hotel but it was forced to close its doors in 2012 after it was found to be running as a cannabis factory.
Since its closure, a planning application was submitted to turn the former hotel into student accommodation, but this was denied.
While the building has been empty for the last 13 years, the latest planning application outlines the desire to refresh it’s tired looking exterior. Visual improvements would include a refurbished mosaic tiling facade at the lower levels and new glazing to the higher levels.
Within the planning application, the new owners of the building have outlined that they were in no way associated with the buildings past, they simply want to focus on breathing life back into it.
