Much awaited Nottingham Broadmarsh regeneration moves step closer

Nottingham City Council has given the green light to the first stage of the much awaited Broadmarsh regeneration programme, which the council believes will put Nottingham in the ‘top 6 retail centres in the country.’

The intu Broadmarsh shopping centre will be redeveloped alongside a new car park. Eventually, a new central library, a new bus station and a new Nottingham College building are planned for the area.

According to the council, the intu Broadmarsh and car park developments have been funded by ‘significant’ private sector investment, grants and future income from these developments. Intu says they are investing £150m into the project.

Councillor Jon Collins, Leader of the City Council, said: ‘This is the latest step in turning our proposals for the Broadmarsh area into reality, and approval today means that subject to contracts being signed, works in the area can start very quickly and hopefully very soon.

‘The people of Nottingham have shown a lot of patience by waiting for the forthcoming redevelopment of the area, and it’s about to be rewarded. This redevelopment is for them and the future of this city – it will bring jobs, growth, more visitors and greater confidence in the city centre.’

An intu spokesperson added: ‘The new mix of shops, restaurants and leisure will add to the attractions the city already offers, creating new places to eat, shop, relax and play, and will generate additional footfall and economic activity well into the evening.’
