Northern MP calls for new Stockton-on-Tees housing plans to be rejected

North Labour MP, Alex Cunningham, has called for housing plans in Wynyard to be stopped, stating he has never received ‘so many contacts from local residents sharing their concerns’.

A planning application has been submitted by Cameron Hall Developments to build up to 700 homes in Wynyard. In addition to constructing new homes, proposals also include plans to create a community centre, medical facilities, place spaces, cycleways, and golf course improvements.

However, Alex Cunningham has described the proposals, which have already attracted more than 650 objections, as ‘undesirable and unnecessary’.

He said: ‘Never before have I had so many contacts from local residents sharing their concerns about the development.’

As well as Mr Cunningham voicing his concerns about the developments, Wynyard Parish Council said the ‘vague and disjoined’ plans were contrary to the local plan and would remove natural habitats.

Mr Cunningham stated that the decision to ‘lump all manner of things’ into one application ‘does the application no favours’ and claims to make the proposal look like an attempt to ‘win approval for a huge housing development on the back of some important elements which are I suspect needed within the community’.

Following this, Historic England have recommended that developers should take out the golf course extension out of the plans while the Woodland Trust said the whole thing should be deferred until the ancient woodland status of adjacent trees had been determined.

Cameron Hall Developments and Jomast Developments, who are also involved with the application, have said more detailed proposals would be forthcoming and a consultation was planned.
