New recommendations proposed to help communities through the housing crisis

The Confederation of Co-operative Housing (CCH) has launched its new manifesto which outlines communities must work together to get through the housing emergency.

Yesterday, 8th January 2024, CCH launched their new manifesto which aims to put communities at the forefront of shaping their own housing futures.

The document, which can be found in full here, outlines 12 vital suggestions that should be taken to ensure the UK steers their way out of the current housing crisis and allows for local residents to comfortably decide on their next steps.

Some of the suggestions include supporting the creation of appropriate structures which would allow for the housing sector to fund the development of new homes, encouraging the creation of a financial intermediary, extending provisions that exclude fully mutual housing co-operatives from enhanced rate damp duty and annual tax to all forms of community led housing, and promoting new forms of community led housing such as cohousing and mutual home ownership.

Commenting on the launch, Blase Lambert, CCH’s chief executive officer said: ‘The United Nations specialised agency for work, the International Labour Organisation, adopted its recommendation 193 which provides a framework for renewed growth of the co-operative movement in 2002. To date, the UK government has not implemented this recommendation.

‘CCH is calling on the next government to work in partnership with the UK co-operative movement to create this framework for co-operative growth.’

‘Our manifesto for change sets out a number of key recommendations to create a bespoke form of tenure and enabling financial, legal and regulatory frameworks that will drive growth in the UK housing co-operative and community led housing sector,’ the chief executive officer added. ‘[The manifesto also] sets out proposals for the social housing sector that will significantly enhance resident voice, choice and control.’
