New development approved on two brownfield sites in Bristol

Over 1,400 new homes are set to be built in South Bristol, after a new development was approved yesterday (October 16). 

The development will include homes, a public park, and business and education facilities on two brownfield sites at Hengrove Park and Hartfield Campus.

The development will include a mixture of homes for social housing and shared ownership.

At least one-third of the new homes will be affordable and in line with the council’s affordable housing policy.

The council will work with Sport England to develop new sports pitches. Local play facilities are also planned for the new park, there will be 22.2 hectares of public parks and 4.4 hectares of other public spaces.

The original planning application was turned down in February 2019, since then, the council has run a series of consultation events to gives residents, businesses and the Hengrove and Whitchurch Park Neighborhood Planning Forum to have an opportunity to have a say.

The feedback has since been used to inform the revised plan which has now been approved subject to conditions.

Significant changes were made to the original plan, these included reducing the overall number of houses, increasing the size of the park and the allocated public space, improving the community and sports facilities and also improving the walking, cycling and bus routes.

Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said: ‘This is a really exciting step towards building one of Bristol’s largest housing developments in decades.’

‘It demonstrates our commitment to addressing one of the city’s most pressing and urgent priorities, making sure that enough affordable homes are being built.’

‘It’s also enormously positive for existing residents and business in South Bristol because as well as delivering well designed, high-quality new housing with a mix of affordable and market sale homes, the development will also include significant investments to the local community.’

In related news, modular home manufacturer ZEDpods has received planning permission from Bristol City Council for 11 houses to be built above a car park in the city.
