Developers have submitted a third set of planning proposals to build flats at the site of a closed down night club in Swindon.
The saying goes ‘the third time’s a charm’, but in Armada Holding’s case, they seem to have gotten lucky three times over.
In March 2024 the development organisation were granted permission to transform 32-34 Bridge Street, formally used as the Broadwalk bar and club, into a commercial space with five apartments. However, two months later they got the greenlight to demolish the building entirely and start afresh with 19 flats.
Fast forward to now – October 2024 – and the Local Democracy Reporting Service have reported that the company has submitted another plan, similar to the last. Armada Holdings outlined they want to turn the site into commercial units and 23 flats.
The application read: ‘The new proposal adds an additional storey, maintaining a recessed fifth floor and setting back to the sixth floor further to ensure the additional height is not visible from the street.
‘This design adheres to the positive feedback from the previous application while incorporating an extra floor to optimise site capacity in an appropriate manner.’
The news comes as Swindon, like the rest of the UK, continues to face a climbing housing crisis. According to Swindon Borough Council, in 2022 there were 2,036 empty homes in the Swindon Council area, while 6,631 families were on the housing waiting list.
