Historic England reveals sites for potential developments

The announcement was made at this year’s UKREiiF in Leeds.

Nothing really stays the same forever. With this idea in mind, Historic England have launched a new investment initiative that details the 17 historic sites across England that could potentially be home to a new development.

Otherwise known as the ‘Heritage Investment Prospectus’, the scheme was launched to coincide with the government’s Plan for Change.

‘This prospectus represents our commitment to work proactively with property industry partners to deliver transformational projects that protect heritage while creating lasting value for investors and communities,’ Claudia Kenyatta and Emma Squire, Director of Regions at Historic England, said. ‘Our historic buildings are better conserved when they’re in use rather than standing empty.’

According to the plans, between 560,000 and 670,000 new homes could be created in England by repurposing existing historic buildings including the former Royal Bank of Scotland in Plymouth. What’s more, former textile mills and military sites have also been earmarked for developments.

‘Our historic buildings represent not just our past, but a significant opportunity for our future,’ Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross added. ‘This prospectus clearly sets out the variety of opportunities for investment in historic sites and buildings across England. By investing in what is already in place, we can use our heritage to improve sustainability and to drive the country’s economic growth.’

The prospectus, which can be accessed in full here, is set to be updated annually with new opportunities.
