Today marks the start of Heat Pump Week and what better way to celebrate than by encouraging more people to sustainably upgrade their homes.
Founded by the Heat pump Association and organised by Green.TV and Plug Me In, the initiative is focussed on three main objectives: raising awareness, encouraging adoption and improving understanding.
Although there’s room for development, the government and housing sector currently seem to be doing a good job of pushing for heat pump adoption. In April 2022 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme was launched which allows for property owners to access grants of up to £7,500 to assist with installation costs. Following this, in 2023 figures show that the number of heat pumps installed in UK had jumped to 36,799 – a 20% increase from the previous year.
One of the main selling points of a heat pump, alongside helping achieve net zero, is they bring down the cost of heating a home, which in the current climate and with winter quickly approaching, is extremely necessary. Generally, the technologies produce around three times more energy than they take in – 300%.
Though, on average, the UK has around 30 million households and at the moment it can only boast around 280,000 heat pumps, showing there’s still a way to go.
On the topic of improving understanding, Plug Me In and Panasonic are set to host an event in Manchester City Centre on September 27th 28th, which will include a competition designed to raise consumer awareness about heat pumps.
Ade Thomas, Founder of Green.TV Media said: ‘We are thrilled to introduce the Heat Pump Week as a platform to accelerate the adoption of heat pump technology and advance the sustainability agenda. With the collective expertise and commitment of our headline partner, Plug Me In, we are looking to drive meaningful change and usher in a greener, more efficient era of heating.’
Ian Fisher, Director of Marketing and Communications at Calisen, said: ‘We are pleased to partner with Green.TV Media to bring the inaugural Heat Pump Week to the UK; a unique and necessary platform to drive engagement and awareness of sustainable heating solutions. At Calisen, we’re committed to the relentless pursuit of smarter energy for all. We believe that it’s together, and only together, that we can achieve net zero and a smarter energy future for the UK.’
In a bid to continue spreading the word, three key discussions will be taking place on LinkedIn – covering mass adoption, workforce preparation, and rollout strategies for local authorities and housing associations.
