Funding available for councils to develop housing, infrastructure and communities

Funding of £10m will allow councils to develop locally-led proposals to deliver new towns and economic growth opportunities.

As part of the Prime Minister’s commitment to ‘level up’ every place in the UK, the government wants local leaders to draw up proposals for thousands of new homes to boost local growth and deliver new jobs after Brexit.

Councils will compete to win a share of the funding by submitting transformational proposals.

The fund will be open nationwide and in order to win the funding, councils will be expected to demonstrate that they want to build not just houses, but new infrastructure and communities where people want to live.

Development corporations can help by providing and coordinating the plans for new development.

Sir George Lacobescu, CEO of the Canary Wharf group will then advise the housing secretary, Robert Jenrick, on which projects to take forward.

Mr. Jenrick said: ‘We want to drive economic growth outside of London and the South East.’

‘Our new development corporations will empower local areas to come forward with ideas for new towns that deliver jobs, houses and economic growth – creating the future Canary Wharf of the North and the Milton Keynes of the Midlands.’

‘I am announcing this competition to find major growth opportunities that will then receive government support and investment.’

Sir John Peace, Midlands engine chairman said a new development corporation in Toton, Nottinghamshire, could have a ‘transformational impact on the region.’

‘Coming together in partnership to plan and develop a new model for development means we will realise a much greater breadth of social, environmental and economic benefits for our communities, as we invest jointly in the future of our region,’ he added

Mr. Lacobescu said: ‘Thirty years ago, development corporations breathed new life and energy into towns and cities across Britain.’

‘This New Development Corporation Competition will be a chance for local areas to promote their plans for delivering the Milton Keynes’s and Canary Wharfs of the 21st century.’
