Everton’s new stadium ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for Liverpool

A new football stadium for Everton Football Club is a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ for Liverpool, claim experts.

The new stadium will be part of Peel L&P’s £5.5bn Liverpool Waters development and will involve plans to develop a community-led project at Goodison Park.

Earlier this year, the club said that the new stadium will deliver a £1bn boost to the city’s economy, creating up to 15,000 new jobs and delivering £237 of additional societal value.

Professor Micheal Parkinson, associate pro-vice-chancellor at the University of Liverpool and author of ‘Liverpool Beyond the Brink,’ said the plans will allow the whole of Liverpool to enjoy the benefits of the regeneration project.

Mr Parkinson said: ‘If you look at what the city has done in the last 30 years it’s been brilliant – we did the waterfront, the city centre and South Liverpool, but we didn’t really do North Liverpool.

‘The stadium is the piece of the jigsaw that will make it really happen and mean that North Liverpool will get its fair share of regeneration.

Sue Grinod, who is credited with maintaining the Royal Albert Dock’s status, said: ‘The waterfront is a great international visual that people recognise and having Bramley Moor Dock will only add to that.

‘The ongoing regeneration of Liverpool’s waterfront is absolutely crucial, not only for the city but for the entire City Region and its economy.

‘We’ve seen the regeneration of the docks, and we’ve seen the new museums come to the waterfront. That journey must continue and it’s great to see the stadium be part of that story.’

Everton’s city neighbours, Liverpool FC, launched the Anfield Project in 2012 which has been hailed as a successful example of stadium-led regeneration.

It’s a £260m redevelopment of its Anfield Stadium which will ultimately see the creation of 1,000 new homes in the area. More than 600 new and 600 refurbished homes have been completed so far.

However, Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium has been wrought with controversy, with local businesses and residents reporting they have been left out of the club’s plans.
