The new programme is designed to provide short-term support for people facing housing uncertainty.
West Northamptonshire Council have launched their new Welcoming Homes Scheme which encourages residents to open their homes to people looking to transition back to living independently. People will be provided with their own bedroom and access to shared living spaces.
To thank hosts for their generosity they will receive a monthly ‘thank-you payment’ to cover expenses, along with dedicated support from a caseworker who assists with the arrangement and ongoing needs.
‘Welcoming home is more than a housing programme, it’s a powerful example of community spirit and mutual support which reflects the Council’s commitment to creating compassionate and connected communities,’ said Cllr David Smith, Cabinet Member for Planning and Communities.
‘This scheme is designed to support individuals and families who may not qualify for emergency or immediate housing assistance but still have a genuine housing need.’
The local authority said they thought of launching this new programme following the success of their Homes for Ukraine model. Here, UK homes hosted Ukrainian nationals and members of their families.
Ahead of being able to move into a hosts property, all residents will undergo thorough DBS and safeguarding checks to ensure a safe and supportive space for everyone.
Cllr Smith continued: ‘We’ve learned a lot from the Homes for Ukraine scheme and by connecting people in need with those willing to help, we’re not only addressing housing needs but building relationships and creating meaningful change within West Northamptonshire. We encourage anyone interested in becoming a host to reach out, have a chat with us, and join us on this impactful journey.’
