Birkenhead to receive £20m from Spending Review

The Wirral-based town has been named as one of the 25 ‘trailblazer neighbourhoods’ as part of Rachel Reeves’ Spending Review.

The initiative aims to provide neighbourhoods with up to £20million over the next ten years to help boost regeneration projects.

Birkenhead, a town based in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, has claimed the funds will support their Birkenhead 2040 Framework – a 10-year project launched by Wirral Council in March 2021. The plan is comprised of regeneration projects which include proposals to create new housing estates, connect the town centre with the waterfront and enhance the areas historic buildings.

‘This is an incredibly welcome boost for Birkenhead as we move forward with our plans to bring about the much needed and long overdue improvements and stimulate the local economy,’ Cllr Paula Basnett, leader of Wiral Council, said. ‘We are working with partners in local business and the community to drive this change forward and this additional fundings will play a significant role in helping our efforts to make a real and positive difference to the town centre and surrounding areas and deliver these communities.’

The government have likewise claimed that the new funding scheme would ‘support improvements people can see on their doorstep, champion local leadership, foster community engagement and strengthen social cohesion.’

Alongside the Wirral, areas including Kingston Upon Hull, Blackpool, Stoke-on-Trent, Stockport and Newcastle have also been revealed to have neighbourhoods that are part of the new programme.
