Areas in London revealed with the most green jobs

Research from Arbtech has exposed areas in the capital city that are set to gain the most green jobs between 2030 and 2050.

The findings, which were published by the ecological consultancy this week, uncovered local government data which established the places set to see the largest increases in green jobs in the relevant period. The data revealed a particular boom of green jobs in low-carbon services, with projections for London boroughs to gain thousands of jobs in this area.

Within the capital city the City of London is the borough projected to see the biggest increase in green jobs. This rise if primarily found in the field of low-carbon services – of the total 10,800 green jobs set to arrive in the city, almost 10,200 are categorised as within this field.

In addition, Westminster is set to experience the second biggest arrival of green jobs. Similar to the City of London, the low-carbon services sector is providing the majority of these roles, with close to 6,500 of the total 7,400 falling within the bracket.

Next, Tower Hamlets is projected a total green job increase of just over 6,500 – the third largest gain. Approximately 5,800 of these jobs come in low-carbon services. Meanwhile, Southwark is projected the fourth largest green job increase with 4,700 of a total 5,600 new green jobs occurring in low-carbon services.

‘The journey to net zero is a critical one, and one that, despite some narratives, can be greatly beneficial to the economy nationwide and locally,’ Andrew Richards from ecological consultancy Arbtech said. ‘This data is a good illustration of how many places will benefit from an increase in green jobs, and it’s of course interesting to identify the area set to reap that benefit the most.’

As well as the majority of green jobs being within the low carbon services sector, the data also showed roles will be available in low carbon electricity, low carbon heat, alternative fuels, energy efficiency and low emission vehicles and infrastructure.

However, experts found that jobs which will become available within the low carbon electricity and energy efficiency sector are significantly less. When it comes to the low carbon electricity sector, places such as Hackney, Croydon and Bromley don’t have many roles available.

Another shocking statistic is that the number of energy efficiency jobs that will become available in the City of London borough stands at a mere two.
