150 homes plan given the greenlight in East Yorkshire despite various disputes

A small village in Yorkshire is set to receive a range of new properties despite one councillor claiming the development has no benefits.

Yesterday, 15th January 2024, the plans were given the go ahead and are due to be built on land in West Field Lane in Swanland. However, not everyone is acceptant of the new project.

Crest Nicholson, a leading property developer based in the UK, are heading the new development, and have recently claimed that it had changed the original plans to include a better mix of houses, including bungalows, following feedback. When the plans were first pitched, they received 40 objections.

Now, the mix of houses include one, two, three and four-bedroom houses alongside green spaces, a walking path, and a play park.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, local Cllr Paul Hopton, said that although the majority of the community have welcomed the changes, he feels the designs of the properties are unimaginative and raise concerns over construction traffic.

At a East riding of Yorkshire Council planning meeting Cllr Hopton said: ‘There’s no benefits to this scheme at all and there’s been no engagement with the community since a meeting held well over a year ago.’

‘The community welcomes the changes to the plans despite the unremarkable design,’ Cllr Hopton said. ‘It’s a shame builders can’t be more imaginative especially when they have so much space. But the access that’s going to be used for construction traffic for the next five years is vastly unsuitable.’

In response to this, the developers agent, Paul Butler, said at the meeting: ‘The application was previously deferred to amend the proposed housing mix which the applicant has done.

‘All other aspects have been considered acceptable and this will provide 95 trees and green space across the site.’
