Behind the garage job: Emmerdale highlights hidden homelessness

ITV soap Emmerdale is set to tackle the growing issue of hidden homelessness in a new storyline centred on a popular character, Kammy Hadiq.

Played by Shebz Miah, Kammy is well-liked within the village community, holds down a steady job as a mechanic and is beginning a new relationship. However, despite appearing to lead a stable life, viewers will soon discover he has been secretly sleeping rough in vehicles and barns.

The upcoming storyline aims to shine a light on the reality of hidden homelessness, where people experiencing housing insecurity outwardly appear to be coping while privately struggling to survive.

Speaking about the new plot, Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper said the soap hopes to challenge misconceptions and encourage viewers to look beyond appearances.

‘This storyline is a vital look at ‘hidden homelessness,’ showing that people can be living on the edge of society, sleeping in their vehicle or barns, while still successfully holding down a job and maintaining relationships,’ she explained.

‘For many reasons, a person’s circumstances can change dramatically and we wanted to challenge the perception of what homelessness looks like and prove that what people present to the outside world isn’t necessarily the whole story. We hope this narrative encourages our viewers to look closer and remember that things are not always quite as they seem.’

As the storyline unfolds, residents of the Dales will discover Kammy’s secret and rally around him in support. However, producers say the storyline also aims to highlight the harsh reality faced by many people experiencing hidden homelessness who do not receive the same support or recognition.

The ITV soap has partnered with organisations such as The Salvation Army to help ensure the storyline is portrayed authentically and responsibly.

This isn’t the first time Emmerdale has addressed homelessness. In 2019, the soap explored rough sleeping through Tony Audenshaw’s character Bob Hope following the breakdown of his relationship. More recently, in 2024, the programme worked alongside Missing People during a storyline involving runaway teenager April Windsor.
