Bristol residents step up to tackle homelessness crisis

A Bristol charity is urging local residents to lace up their walking shoes to support people experiencing homelessness in the city.

Caring in Bristol has launched the Bristol Cares Challenge 2026, inviting participants to walk 20,000 steps on either 27th March or 28th March. The step target reflects the more than 20,000 people currently waiting for social housing in the city.

The charity, founded in 1987, provides emergency support, housing advice and longer-term assistance to help people move out of crisis and into stable accommodation. The money raised from this challenge will fund these services.

‘Small actions, when done together, can create powerful change,’ Casey Cox, corporate and community partnerships coordinator at Caring in Bristol. ‘Every step taken and every pound raised brings us closer to Bristol where everyone has a place to call home.’

People can complete the 20,000 steps in one continuous walk or spread them throughout the day. Walkers are free to choose their own route, whether through the city, local parks or even on a treadmill.

Participants can join individually or in teams with family, friends or colleagues. Those who sign up will receive a fundraising pack containing guidance and sponsorship materials and people who complete the challenge will be awarded a certificate.

Organisers are encouraging walkers to share their progress online using the hashtag #BristolCaresChallenge.
