Harmony Works Trust have secured an additional £1m grant, meaning its competition is just a stone’s throw away.
Back in 2017 Harmony Works Trust – a music charity based in Sheffield – proposed plans to redevelop a former nightclub into a new music hub. The project is set to take over Canada House, which was originally built in 1874.

The charity confirmed they purchased the building for £1.6m in May last year and have since partnered with a number of organisations to fund their development. The latest instalment has come from the Garfield Weston Foundation who have donated a grant worth £1m.
‘We are absolutely thrilled and deeply grateful to the Garfield Western Foundation for their extraordinary belief in our vision,’ Emily Pieters, project director at Harmony Works, said. ‘Their pledge is a powerful reflection of their confidence in what we’re trying to achieve.
‘With this, we’re closer than ever to creating a permanent home for inspirational music education in the heart of Sheffield. But we’re not quite there yet. We still need to raise over £1m to facilitate the transformation of Canda House and unlock the full potential of this iconic building. If you believe in music, heritage and young people – now’s the time to get involved.’
Other funders of the scheme include The National Lottery Heritage Fund who have provided £4.7m and Arts Council England who have given £3.5m.
What’s more, Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and the government’s levelling up fund have also contributed.
Sophie Weston, deputy chair of the Garfield Weston Foundation, added: ‘We believe in supporting a diverse range of charities across the UK. From local community initiatives to large national projects, the common thread is that all our grantees make a real positive difference, improving lives and strengthening communities throughout the country.
‘We are thrilled to be supporting Harmony Works, who do amazing work inspiring young people through music.’
