Sir Robert McAlpine commits to net-zero emissions within five years

Building firm Sir Robert McAlpine has committed to net-zero carbon emissions within the next five years.

They’ve made the pledge in their new sustainability strategy for 2020-2024 which sets how the company will implement new carbon reduction initiatives, cut down on construction waste and use more ethical supply chains to reach the goal.

They also want to see a year-on-year increase in social value delivered across the firm’s operations. They currently partner with the Social Profit Calculator to set targets, monitor, and improve the social value of each project.

Sir Robert McAlpine carries out engineering and construction for a range of industries including oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, nuclear, pharmaceutical, defence, chemical, water and mining.

According to the government’s Technology Strategy Board, the construction, operation and maintenance of the built environment account for 45% of total UK carbon emissions.

Simon Richards, head of sustainability at Sir Robert McAlpine, said: ‘As individuals, we are passionate about the work that we do and delivering quality projects for our clients, yet the impact that our industry has on the environment and society cannot be ignored, Climate Change being a prime example.

‘It is collectively our responsibility to address this, and this strategy gives our people and projects a framework to do so proactively and collaboratively with our supply chain partners and the wider construction industry.

‘We all have a role to play, our strategy emphasises our skills and expertise to take up the challenge and lead on embedding change, making a meaningful, lasting difference.’
